Can we assume that phonics and literacy go together? Current studies show that phonics and literacy do not actually mesh. Two recent studies on transitional kindergartners conclude that phonics and literacy are not as correlated as we may have hoped.
Therefore, literacy (critical thinking) instruction must be included in phonics instruction.
This issue needs to be addressed. We hope to investigate how phonics and literacy can become more integrated in ABC instruction as we move forward.
We are open to hearing your input and suggestions on how you think this can be accomplished. It is important that children understand what they are reading and can act accordingly in order to come to their own informed conclusions!
