The September 2018 issue of IDRA is putting the “Focus: English Learner Literacy”. We say full steam ahead!
The article by Nilka Vailes called “School Leaders Improve English Learner Literacy with Focus on Inferencing” is on the right track. Yes, inferencing and other critical thinking skills need to start in kindergarten. But where and how do we begin?
Unambigious ABC letter examples is where we can obviously support Spanish EL students. ‘A is for AIRPLANE/avion’ instead of the contradictory and confusing ‘A is for APPLE/manzana’. Prevent psychological lack of self-confidence due to repeated constant confusing picture language conflicts!
For kindergartners digging their way out of negative teacher reports on paper assignments is disruptive to their belief in self-confidence progress. We need to do the opposite and encourage these EL students to succeed.
